Speakers:
Ground Motions in Sedimentary Basins in Southern California
Rashid Shams, PhD Candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering
“I am Rashid Shams, first-year PhD student in Nweke Research Group in Sonny Astani Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at USC. My primary area of research is understanding ground motions in basins in the Southern California region, where I am working to better understand why and how ground motions amplify in sedimentary basins. I am also working to separate path and site component in ground motion models. Prior to joining PhD, I completed my Master’s in Earthquake Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad, Indian in 2022.”
Quantum Error Correction
Joseph Barreto, PhD Student in Physics
Joey is a rising second-year physics PhD student in the group of Prof. Daniel Lidar. Prior to joining USC, he worked on quantum computing at NASA, TU Delft, and UC Berkeley. His interests lie at the intersection of open quantum systems, error correction, and novel qubits, with an overarching goal of suppressing noise in quantum hardware. Outside of research, you can find him exploring trails in SoCal, thinking about sustainability, and doing crossword puzzles.
