Speakers:

The Habitability of Saturn’s Moon Titan for Acetylenotrophs

Maya Yanez, PhD Candidate in Earth Sciences

Maya D. Yanez is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Earth Sciences at USC. She earned her B.A. in Astronomy from the University of Colorado Boulder and her honors thesis work used observational astronomy to analyze spectra of Pluto. Maya’s work now focuses on Earth life–bacteria that eat acetylene, or acetylenotrophs–and whether they might be good candidates for life out beyond Earth. In particular, she focuses her studies on Saturn’s moon Titan, a world rich in acetylene. Outside of the lab and calculations, Maya enjoys sharing science with the general public and students. This past academic year she was the Joint Educational Project’s STEM Education Fellow, where she designed lesson plans based on her research that are now being published and incorporated into her thesis.

ABLATOR: Training Machine Learning Models at Scale

Iordanis Fostiropoulos, PhD Candidate in Computer Science

Iordanis Fostiropoulos is a Ph.D. candidate at USC advised by Prof. Laurent Itti. Iordanis works on improving the generalization of AI systems with practical applications in Learning Methods and Machine Learning systems.
