Congratulations to Assistant Professor Sami Assaf (Mathematics) and her husband, Sean Borman, on the birth of their daughter Adelie Glora Borman, b. May 30.

As noted earlier, Professor Maja Mataric recently won the Women of Vision award given by the Anita Borg Institute, which honors women making significant contributions to technology. Maja’s award is for Innovation. Her acceptance speech can be viewed here. Once again, congratulations, Maja.

Past WiSE student, Marcia Abbott (PhD 2010, Biological Sciences) recently received the International Early Career Award given by The Physiological Society in London for the work she did at USC in the lab of Professor Lorraine Turcotte (Biological Sciences). Congratulations to both Marcia and Lorraine!

Alexa Sieracki, former recipient of a WiSE Undergraduate Research Grant, and now a senior in the Department of Earth Sciences, has been offered the job with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Congratulations, Alexa!

Recent WiSE event, “WiSE Research Horizons: A Day Honoring Professor Hanna Reisler,” was featured in USC News and USC Dornsife News.

The Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences has awarded Graduate Student Prizes for Excellence in Research with a Substantial Mathematical Component to WISE graduate students Wan-Jung Kuo (Physics) and Sushmita Allam (Biomedical Engineering). Congratulations to Wang-Jung and Sushmita!

Professor Andrea Armani (Chemical Engineering and Materials Science) has won a Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering Grant for Advancement of Interdisciplinary Research from the National Academy of Engineering. The Grainger Grant will support the team’s work (with Matthew Gevaert of KIYATEC Inc.) to integrate KIYATEC’s three-dimensional cell culture platform with a label-free optical sensor technology recently developed at USC. This integration will enable more accurate investigations of cellular responses, expediting the discovery and verification of pharmaceutical agents and the understanding of fundamental biological processes. The research of Professor Sarah Feakins (Earth Sciences)was featured in a series of articles, “Doubt cast over long-held theories of human evolution,” “Questions About Human Evolution Raised In New Geological Study,” and “How long have humans walked on grasslands?”

Professor Maja Mataric (Computer Science), Vice Dean for Research in the Viterbi School of Engineering, has won the Women of Vision award given by the Anita Borg Institute. The Anita Borg Institute Women of Vision Awards, hosted by the Anita Borg Institute Board of Trustees, honors women making significant contributions to technology. Professor Malancha Gupta (Chemical Engineering and Materials Science) has won the NSF Career Award: “CAREER: Integrating Research and Education Via Low-Temperature Solventless Formation of Hierarchical Porous-on-Porous Materials.” Congratulations, Malancha!

Undergraduate Sarah Hester, who received a WiSE Undergraduate Research award to work with Professor Joseph Kunc (Astronautical Engineering) on her project, “Thrust Augmentation of a Solid Rocket Motor By Means of Inert Gas Injection,” has won the Laufer Award for best senior design project in the AME department, 1st place in the Viterbi Senior Design competition, 2nd place at the USC Undergraduate Research Symposium, 1st place at the AIAA Student Conference Region VI, and this week 1st place at the AIAA International Student Conference — making it the best aerospace team project in the nation! Congratulations to Sarah and Joseph!

Professor Katrina Edwards (Biological sciences, Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies) has been awarded the 2012 A.G. Huntsman Award for Excellence in Marine Science. Professor Burcin Becerik-Gerber has been appointed to the Stephen Schrank Early Career Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Congratulations, Burcin!

Nishita Deka, recipient of a WiSE Undergraduate Research Award, received a $10,000 Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) Award — the largest STEM Merit Award given in the United States. She was presented the award by astronaut Walt Cunningham on September 13. Professor Andrea Armani (Chemical Engineering and Materials Science) nominated Deka for the award.
