April 2014

Congratulations to Professor Anna Krylov (Chemistry), whose petition with Professors Emily Carter and Laura Gagliardi against the preliminary speaker line-up proposed by the International Quantum Chemistry Conference 2015 ( which failed to include any of the many respected women in the field) has successfully rallied huge support in her community. Nature Magazine discusses the petition in its article, Rethink Your Gender Attitudes. 

Congratulations to WiSE Undergraduate Erica Arnold on winning a first place award from the USC Schwarzenegger Institute at the 2014 USC Undergraduate Symposium for Scholarly and Creative Work. Erica’s poster, “Sustainable Energy Recovery from Wastewater Treatment of Bioelectrochemical Fuel Cells (BEFCs),” can be seen here. Congratulations also to Erica’s mentor Professor Massoud Pirbazari. 

Congratulations to WiSE Undergraduate Yael Freiberg on winning an honorable mention in the Life Sciences division of the 2014 USC Undergraduate Symposium for Scholarly and Creative Work. Congratulations to WiSE PhD Students Melissa Williams, Candy Hwang, and Elena Ferri(all chemistry) who were each recently recognized for the quality of their research.Williams was honored by the International Society for Antiviral Research (ISAR) for excellence in scientific poster presentations at the society’s annual international conference (ICAR. Hwang was among 625 young researchers from 78 countries selected from a pool of more than 20,000 applicants worldwide to participate in the 2013 Nobel Laureate Lindau Meeting. At the meeting, Hwang was one of three students selected to participate in a debate series filmed by Nature. Their debate with two Nobel laureates, Gerhard Ertl (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2007) and Robert Grubbs (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2005), focused on the future of catalysis in the face of the world’s dwindling supply of rare-earth metals. Ferri received a Best Poster Award at the French American Workshop held in Grenoble, France, in July. Ferri’s research, a French-American collaboration on chromatin remodeling proteins, is supported by Partner University Fund, a Chateaubriand Fellowship, USC Dornsife and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).
